Sputnik Moment? We had it Two Years Ago!

During his speech on the State of the union the President talked about Sputnik and how it spurred the country to new innovations.  Here is that passage:

Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how we would beat them to the moon.  The science wasn’t even there yet.  NASA didn’t exist.  But after investing in better research and education, we didn’t just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs.

This is our generation’s Sputnik moment.  Two years ago, I said that we needed to reach a level of research and development we haven’t seen since the height of the Space Race.  And in a few weeks, I will be sending a budget to Congress that helps us meet that goal.  We’ll invest in biomedical research, information technology, and especially clean energy technology -– (applause) — an investment that will strengthen our security, protect our planet, and create countless new jobs for our people.

The President is right  we did have a Sputnik moment.  But he is wrong about what happened or should after we had it.   He is calling for more government spending.  But the reality is that what really happened on our most recent Sputnik moment was the birth of the Tea party.  The real grassroots movement in this country is the Tea party.  And it rose out of the dismay of middle class America.  They are being squeezed out and that is not good for the country.  The President talks about green investment but wants to do it through government funding.  The last two years proved that does not work and the election results of 2010 should have told our President that.  But like the thoroughbred running 10 furlongs he has his blinders on.  The house sent a clear message of their intent to cut spending and roll back his agenda.  What does he do?  Trots out some of the same ideas he spoke of last year.

Sputnik was launched with the TARP and we all know who started that.  To continue it was wrong and this President did just that.  Why is China surpassing us in solar energy research?  Because they have less regulation on business.  Why does China make all of our CFL bulbs?  Because they have less regulation and LOWER wages.  The Congress of the United States passed a bill on CFL bulbs  mandating their use by 2014.  In so doing they bowed to the small group of environmentalists and gave China a market for a long time.  We the People want to enter the race.  But we wwant to do it with less taxes and less government.

And in keeping with his buddy Rahm Emanuel’s philosophy he very coyly uses the no good crisis go to waste theory by framing it in the past by talking about Sputnik.  Remember this guy is using slight of hand.  Always watch the other one.  He says one thing but means another.
